It could be the wet wake-up call you've been waiting for: Bompas & Parr is recruiting male performers to lavish guests with festive tipples at the studio’s Christmas creation throughout December at Westfield London.

While many of the details remain cloaked in mystery, mer-murings (sorry) of topless Mermen immersed in and tending a water based bar are surfacing; and news of the notoriously eccentric creators’ Beyond the Waterfall extravaganza are the talk of the town.

Beyond The Waterfall is set to be the most unique festive adventure in London this Christmas. Set deep in the heart of Westfield London's luxury precinct, The Village, mixing inspiration from fairy tales, mythology and science fiction; the journey evokes the emotions and joy of the season while creating a feeling of unbridled escapism.

Throughout December guests will venture across a 20m lagoon on small boats through a real waterfall. On the opposing shore they will embark on a journey of self-discovery, roving among an ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ filled with piles of gemstones before arriving at the hidden cocktail bar where they will find the mermen protagonists.

Beyond the Waterfall is one of Bompas & Parr’s most ambitious projects to date, uniting disciplines including structural engineers, mining consultants and theatrical prop-makers to transport thousands of Westfield London’s visitors into another dimension. Inspired by the narratives belonging to the most majestic mermen in literature, including the prophetic sea-god Glaucus, the cocktail bar at the heart of the experience means this grown-up treat can rival the seasonal experiences aimed at children.

My inbox occasionally receives some covert emails detailing deeds and happenings that are not really intended for all to see, but, as a special treat, I will share the contents of a casting call.

‘Calling London's Mermen to help make our Christmas project go with a splash’

In addition to bartending skills (or in lieu of!), mermen are also sought who are experienced in creating witty, playful material, are strong improvisers and enjoy audience interaction. Each merman will have a strong character and a specific skill-set / party-trick which we can weave into the show. Together, we will devise a wealth of material based on the skills of the chosen performers, that unites cabaret, magic and wonder; a mash-up of drag, music and theatre to blow the minds of guests.

Skills including massage, hairdressing, nail care and psychic abilities will be highly prized.

Those successful will be recalled to a further pool-based audition to which the press are invited. At this second audition, mermen will be expected to demonstrate their swimming prowess and customer engagement skills from the water. Mermen attending the second casting call should bring tight-fitting swimwear (not swim shorts) in order to fit into the merman’s tail.

In particular, mermen will be required to: luxuriate in style while immersed in water, flap seductively on land and channel their inner fish.

To apply, email ‘Merman Casting’ as the subject line to, enclosing a headshot along with a letter expressing your interest and a CV.
